Ministry of Ecology and Environment: The air quality on New Year’s Eve improved significantly compared with last year

On Feb 1, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment announced the air quality in Chinese cities during the 2022 Spring Festival, which runs from New Year’s Eve to the first day of the first lunar month. In 2022, air quality in 339 Chinese cities on New Year’s Eve improved significantly from the same period last year, with the maximum hourly average concentration of PM2.5 dropping 22.7 percent from last year’s New Year’s Eve.During the peak period, the number of heavily polluted cities decreased by 29 compared with last year, and 38 compared with the average of the past three years.According to the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, China’s air quality will be generally good during the Spring Festival in 2022 (from 19:00 on New Year’s Eve to 6pm on the first day of the first lunar month). Some cities in northeast China, the Yangtze River Delta, central China and Xinjiang have experienced heavy or above pollution due to fireworks.Air quality in 29 of China’s 339 prefecture-level cities reached the severe pollution level or above during the New Year’s Eve period (from 19 PM on January 31 to 6 PM on February 1), and nine of them reached the serious pollution level.Compared with the previous day, the number of heavily polluted and severely polluted cities increased by 14 and 7, respectively, indicating that fireworks had a significant impact on urban air quality.Under the influence of fireworks, the PM2.5 hourly concentration in Chinese cities rose rapidly from 19 PM on January 31 to 2 PM on February 1.The average PM2.5 concentration in 339 cities at and above the prefecture-level reached 99 micrograms per cubic meter as of 2 p.m. Monday. A total of 57 cities across The country had an average PM2.5 concentration greater than 150 micrograms per cubic meter, severely polluted or above, with 22 cities having an average PM2.5 concentration greater than 250 micrograms per cubic meter, severely polluted. It is worth mentioning that during the Spring Festival of 2022, Beijing’s air quality improved significantly compared with the Spring Festival of the past three years due to the nationwide ban on fireworks and cold air. During this period, the maximum concentration of PM2.5 was 6 micrograms/cubic meter, down 97.9% from the same period last year (the peak of the same period last year was 289 micrograms/cubic meter).Compared with the average peak concentration in the past three years, the average peak concentration has decreased by 97.3%, and the hourly air quality has reached excellent.According to the components and the surrounding area network observation of the beijing-tianjin-hebei region, cities on New Year’s eve night in PM2.5 components indicates a fireworks display the characteristics of the component concentration increased significantly, including potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium ions, etc., heze, tianjin, hengshui, kaifeng, yangquan and jining city related characteristics of component concentration rise especially; No significant impact of fireworks was observed in Beijing.According to the China Environmental Monitoring Station forecast, in the next three days, China will be affected by the precipitation process, atmospheric diffusion and clearance conditions are generally favorable, the air quality is mainly good, east China, central and southern North China, Xinjiang Tianshan Northern Slope may have moderate to heavy pollution. On February 2 to 4, most of most of south China, southwest, north China north and northeast China is given priority to with good, most of central and southern north China, east China north, northwest, central hunan, hubei, the chengdu plain, sichuan and northeastern sichuan local with good to light pollution is given priority to, at the junction of hebei shangdong and henan province, east China bureau, shaanxi guanzhong, shuhe, southern xinjiang and north slope of tianshan mountain in xinjiang possible moderate pollution,Local short-term severe in East China. Most of northeast China is fine, southern Heilongjiang, most of Jilin and central Liaoning are mainly fine to mild pollution, and central Jilin may have moderate pollution. The primary pollutant is PM2.5.Air pollution levels are expected to increase by 1 or 2 levels from the forecast due to the mass discharge of fireworks during the Spring Festival.Source: CCTV News
